The Digitale Wörterbuch (DWDS) is a project by the Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (BBAW). The aim is to create a "digital lexical system" - a comprehensive word information system that is accessible to every user via the Internet, which provides information about the German vocabulary in the past and present.
The contemporary language DWDS dictionary provides information on the form and meaning of over 260,000 words of the German language. The dictionary is based on the digitized version of the "Wörterbuchs der deutschen Gegenwartssprache", which was published between 1952 and 1977 and is therefore partially out of date in its keyword. It is supplemented by parts of the "Großen Wörterbuchs der deutschen Sprache" (3rd edition, 1999). These articles are continuously revised by the project group of the DWDS and ZDL (Zentrum für digitale Lexikographie der deutschen Sprache). In addition, new words are determined by the Corpus -based project group and described lexicographically. In addition, the DWDS dictionary 2025 was expanded by 1,600 articles from "WAHRIG Deutsches Wörterbuch".
