Our knowledge of the world's literatures comes almost exclusively from translations. After all, who could claim to be able to read everything or at least a lot of the original text? German literature owes its wealth and diversity to literary imports. However, we often don't even know the names of the translators. The Germersheim Translator Lexicon is intended to remedy this deficiency. The data collected will also enable a new, intercultural view of the history of German literature (from the days of Luther to the 21st century).
Following the example of the Swedish translator lexicon (www.oversattarlexikon.se), which has been created in recent years, the digital and online Germersheimer translator lexicon, which is freely accessible online, publishes scientifically based portraits written in essay form of important and interesting translators. In addition to literary translators, the lexicon will also present translators who have brought philosophical, scientific, religious or political texts into German. The essays on the life and work of the individual translators are supplemented by comprehensive bibliographies.
