Als Herausgeber fungiert Hans von Storch, Professor am Institut für Meteorologie der Universität Hamburg und an der Ocean University of China in Qingdao sowie ehemaliger Leiter des Instituts für Küstenforschung am Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht.

Mit dem Programm der Oxford Research Encyclopedias (ORE) baut der Wissenschaftsverlag Oxford University Press (OUP) dynamische Online-Enzyklopädien für mehr als 20 Disziplinen auf, die eine wissenschaftliche Alternative zu Wikipedia darstellen.
Enthalten sind von Experten verfasste und geprüfte Überblicksartikel zu verschiedensten Themengebieten. Die Autoren der jeweiligen Einträge sind benannt, die Artikel entsprechend referenziert und als Literaturliste am Ende der Einträge wiedergegeben. Die Online-Enzyklopädien werden monatlich durch neue oder überarbeitete Einträge sowie neu erstellte Überblicksartikel ergänzt.
