As a large-scale oral history project, the online archive brings together filmed interviews with 41 protagonists who fled to Germany between 1945 and 2016. They come from 28 countries of origin in South America, Africa, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, the Near and Middle East, and Southeast and East Asia and share their stories of escape in nine languages. The interviews are available in German and English. The life stories cover a wide variety of social or cultural backgrounds, religions, sexualities and speak about the countries of origin, the escape and life in Germany. At the time of recording, the interviewees were between 19 and 87 years old. The individual interviews are between one and six hours long.
