From 1902 to 1914, four German expeditions in Chinese Turkestan recovered countless texts in a variety of scripts and languages and brought them to Berlin. These texts are the property of the BBAW and are curated and restored by the Oriental Department of the Berlin State Library Foundation Prussian Cultural Heritage. The Turfan Research Unit at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences deals with ancient Turkish and Iranian finds. It is a partner institution in the British Library's international cooperation project "International Dunhuang Project", which aims to make information and digital copies of all manuscripts, paintings, textiles and artifacts from Dunhuang and other sites on the Silk Road freely usable on the Internet.
