Atlas Deutsche Sprache

The "Atlas Deutsche 'Sprache" deals with the history, structure and systematics of our language. In addition to language and dialect maps, clear graphics and texts explain language developments and relationships.
The introduction explains the basics of language, words, sound formation and writing. The historical section leads from the emergence of writing and the discovery of printing to the history of language families. The development of Germanic from Indo-European, the structure of dialects and the transmission of loan words lead to the emergence of Old High German and up to today's standard language.
Overviews of grammatical differences, the origin of place and river names, statistics on sentence lengths, case use and the like in literature, daily newspapers and film dialogues shed light on our current language situation. Over 165 individual maps cover the geographical differences in the naming of objects and activities in everyday life. This atlas offers both language and cultural history.
