HathiTrust is the joint digital library of over 150 mainly US-American research and university libraries. In addition to the works scanned by the libraries themselves, it also includes digitised contents from collaborations of individual partner libraries with Google, the Internet Archive and Microsoft. The collection comprises more than 17 million volumes across many different subject areas, with a focus on history, linguistics, literature, theology and philosophy. About half of the works are written in English, the second largest language group being German, followed by French, Spanish, Chinese, Russian and a large number of other languages. In addition to works in the public domain, HathiTrust's collection also includes works protected by copyright. However, the latter can only be accessed by members of the partner libraries. Books published outside of the United States before 1872 are considered in the public domain by HathiTrust and are therefore accessible worldwide. Access to works published in the United States until 1923 is only available with an IP address from the United States. The download of complete books is restricted to the HathiTrust members community. For others, only individual pages can be saved as PDF files. Full-text-search is available for the entire collection as well as for individual digitised pages.
