WBÖ-Online

The Wörterbuch der Bairischen Mundarten in Österreich (WBÖ)) is a long-term project of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) for comprehensive documentation and lexicographic review of the richly structured basic and regional dialects (old) Austria. It is published on the publication and research platform Lexikalisches Informationssystem Österreich (LIÖ).

The newly written dictionary articles are connected to the printed edition, which includes the letter area A to Ezzes. They contain detailed, editorially prepared information on importance, pronunciation, geographical distribution and usage contexts of the Bavarian dialect words. In addition, the articles are linked to the WBÖ-Belegdatenbank , the digital version of the WBÖ handout collection, and with a card tool.

The database is under construction. There are currently more than 5,000 articles available (as of June 2025). In the coming years, the system will be gradually expanded and supplemented by the retro digitized volume of the printed volumes.
