Werkverzeichnis Henry van den Velde

The digital catalogue raisonné of the Weimar Classic Foundation's Museum Directorate records Henry van de Velde's works of applied art and interior design. It covers all of van de Velde's designs in metal, textiles, ceramics and wood that have been identified to date and currently presents 1,657 documented models from the years 1891 to 1941. The entries contain information on the year of design, dimensions, technique, materials, manufacturers, clients, provenance and surviving examples. High-resolution images with zoom function complement the object documentation. A particular added value of the online edition is the first-ever publication of 377 models of seating, reclining and wicker furniture. The accompanying image and source database comprises around 800 images: historical photographs of the furniture, some of which come from the artist's estate, catalogues and an order book for wicker furniture. These sources are crucial for the often complicated attribution process. Introductory texts about the furniture answer questions about materials and manufacture. The work is contextualised by four supplementary directories of people (419 entries), organisations (121), commissions (243) and exhibitions (87), illustrated with a total of over 1,400 images. This highlights the key players, institutions and networks that shaped van de Velde's work. Famous clients of Henry van de Velde, such as Harry Graf Kessler and Helene Kröller-Müller, can be found here, as can the arts and crafts workshops of basket weaver Ernst Schmiedeknecht in Tannroda and the cabinetmaker H. Scheidemantel in Weimar. The catalogues thus also make a substantial contribution to provenance and collection history and enable a well-founded classification in art, social and economic historical contexts.
