More than 120 regional newspapers with more than 500,000 pages were digitized and converted into machine-searchable full text. A special feature of the project is the processing of the material, which was developed in close cooperation with the Hessisches Landesamt fÃƒÂ¼r geschichtliche Landeskunde (HLGL). Central themes of the epoch are presented in introductory short texts and linked to the digitised original sources. In addition to search access via the selection of individual newspaper titles, a full text search and a date search, a topic navigator, an editorially edited timeline and a map interface are available as research tools. The digitisation of the leading medium of this period, the regional press, enables all citizens to take a look into the details of life at the turn of the ages 1914 to 1918. A new and important pool of primary material is emerging for science, which until now could only be viewed on the spot and thus at considerable expense.
