Die Datenbank verzeichnet Kunsthistoriker, die in den wichtigsten Beschreibungen zur Geschichte der Kunstgeschichte erwähnt werden. Das Lexikon wurde 1986 in Form von Karteikarten begonnen, seit 1996 besteht es in elektronischer Form und wird kontinuierlich erweitert. Herausgeber ist Lee Sorensen, Kunsthistoriker und Bibliothekar an der Duke University.
