Die Kartensammlung bietet ca. 67.000 Karten vom 16. bis 21. Jh. online in zum Teil hoher Auflösung zum kostenfreien Download an. Ein Schwerpunkt der Sammlung liegt auf seltenen Karten des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts von Nord- und Südamerika. Die Sammlung enthält außerdem historische Karten der Welt, Europas, Asiens und Afrikas. Neben Atlanten sind auch Globen, Bücher, Seediagramme und eine Vielzahl einzelner Karten vertreten. Zusammengestellt wurde die Sammlung seit 1980 von David Rumsey, Präsident der US-amerikanischen Firma Cartography Associates. Rumsey übergab seine Sammlung mittlerweile der Stanford University.
