LGBT Thought and Culture

The database, which is still under construction, is expected to contain approximately 150,000 pages of material on the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) movement, including texts, letters, magazines, speeches, interviews and collector's items from the late 19th to the early 21st century. This also includes the collections and legacies of the filmmaker and gay rights activist Pat Rocco (* 1934), the lesbian activist and editor Jeanne Cordova (* 1948), the sex researchers Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) and Harry Benjamin (1885-1986).

The magazines that have been digitized include Outline (1987-2000) for the Chicago LGBT community, Blacklines (1996-2006), which deals with African-American LGBT issues, and En La Vida (1996-2006) for Latinos. Books include: the non-fiction book The Homosexual in America (1951) by Edward Sagarin, published under the pseudonym Donald Corey, the gay novel Imre: A Memorandum by Edward Prime-Stevenson (pseudonym: Xavier Mayne), written in Europe, or the essay collection Left Out: The Politics of Exclusion by Martin B. Duberman. When completed, the database will not only offer archive material from the USA but from all over the world, with a special focus on Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Latin America.
