The History Guide indexes thematic websites that offer freely accessible material on historical topics: texts, be they sources or publications, maps, images, audiovisual material, etc. In some cases, digitally available individual publications (electronic dissertations, converted older secondary literature) or websites of historically relevant institutions (archives, specialist libraries, historical institutes, etc.) are also indexed.
The focus is on websites on the history of the Anglo-American cultural area. Since the History Guide cooperates with Clio-Online, the subject catalogue also contains numerous records on websites on Central and Western European history, which were mainly created by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Munich (BSB) and other project partners of Clio-Online (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin; Centre for Contemporary Historical Research; Library for Research on the History of Education). The thematic websites on Anglo-American history focus on websites that offer genuine materials for research and teaching.
The History Guide has been operated at the Niedersächsischen Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek (SUB) Göttingen since 1997 for the professional public.
